Fuel prices can change quickly, but carsharing offers stability. At Peg City Car Co-op, sharing vehicles reduces costs, lowers emissions, and makes transportation more efficient.
Many Winnipeggers start carsharing to save money, avoid the hassle of ownership, or reduce their impact on the planet. But those choices don’t stop once you’re behind the wheel. A few simple habits can help reduce fuel consumption and keep costs down — especially when gas prices are high.

Choose a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle When You Can
Choosing a hybrid or electric vehicle (EV) is one of the easiest ways to reduce fuel and emissions.
Peg City’s fleet includes a growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles. These vehicles:
- use less (or no) gasoline
- produce fewer emissions
- help keep operating costs more stable across the fleet
More than half of our FLO fleet is hybrid electric, and FIX includes many hybrid and EV options. You can find the nearest FIX hybrids or EVs in the app’s vehicle options menu.
Because our vehicles are shared, choosing an electric option helps reduce fuel use across the entire system.

Fuel-Efficient Driving Tips to Reduce Fuel Use
The way you drive directly affects fuel consumption. Small changes can make a noticeable difference.
Stick to the speed limit
At highway speeds, driving faster saves very little time but significantly increases fuel use. Keeping to the speed limit is one of the simplest ways to improve fuel efficiency.
Fact: Driving 120 km/h instead of 95 km/h saves only about 1 minute per 10 km, but increases fuel use by up to 30%.
Drive smoothly
There’s no need for a lead foot. Rapid acceleration and hard braking use more fuel and don’t meaningfully reduce travel time. Smooth acceleration and gentle braking are more efficient — and often make for a more comfortable trip.
Driving smoothly also gives you more opportunities to coast, helping you get more distance from your tank.
Avoid idling when possible
Waiting for a friend for more than a minute or two? Turn off the vehicle to save fuel and reduce emissions.
Remember to turn off the vehicle’s electronic systems to prevent the battery from draining.

Fuel Up Thoughtfully
When it’s time to fill up, a small choice can make a difference.
Even minor price differences add up across a shared fleet. If you’re already heading to a gas station, choosing a lower-cost option helps keep overall fuel costs down.
You can use tools like GasBuddy to find the best gas prices near you.
How This Fits into Carsharing
With carsharing, small decisions add up across many members and trips.
Choosing a hybrid. Driving more smoothly. Being mindful when fueling up.
None of these are major changes on their own. But across hundreds of vehicles and thousands of trips, they help:
- keep carsharing more affordable over time
- reduce overall fuel consumption
- lower emissions

To Sum It Up
Peg City Car Co-op is designed to give Winnipeggers flexibility in getting around. Whether you’re running errands or heading out of town, you can choose the vehicle that fits your trip.
If you’re able to choose a lower-emission vehicle and adopt a few fuel-efficient driving habits, you’re helping build a more efficient and sustainable carsharing system for everyone.
And as always, if you have questions about any of our vehicles — including hybrid or electric options — our staff are happy to help.
