Re:Member is a series of helpful tips and reminders for Peg City Car Co-op members.

This month’s topic: Member perks!

When you buy a share and become a Member of Peg City Car Co-op, not only do you benefit from perks that don’t apply to your Casual driver friends, you also receive special discounts with local partners, opportunities to earn free driving credits, and even free concert tickets!

What KIND of perks, you ask? We’ll break it down for you:

Free overnight hours, between midnight and 7AM.
A daily rate cap. Members pay for a maximum of 8 hours, everyday. That means if you book for 10, 12, or even 23 1/2 hours, you’ll only pay for 8, plus your kilometres driven.
Low hourly rate. Casual drivers pay $9/hr. Members only pay $4.85/hr. (Member Plus pay even less, at $2.85/hr!)
Additional drivers. Members can add up to 4 more drivers to their account.
• Roaming options. If you need to use a car while you’re in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, or Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario, look into our reciprocal agreements with HOURCAR and VRTUCAR!
• Voting rights. By becoming a share-holding member, you get a say in how your carshare thrives. Our next AGM is coming up in the new year.

What about, you know, FUN perks?

Earn driving credits through our Shop Local program! These cards can be found in each vehicle, or at our participating businesses. Each time you visit one of our Shop Local partners and make a purchase – maybe a coffee at Parlour or a game night at Across the Board – you receive a stamp. Each month, you can turn in one of those full cards to redeem $10 driving credit.

If you are a local business, and you’d like to join our Shop Local program, we would love to send our members your way! We’ll provide you with a stamp and stamp cards. Get in touch with us at [email protected]

• Want to earn even more credits? Join our Ambassador Program. Members can earn up to $40 in driving credits per month by sharing photos of their trips on social media using a Peg City car.

Free concert tickets. You read that right! The West End Cultural Centre has offered up tickets for us to give away to our members. We post a monthly contest across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – all you have to do is be a share-holding member, and comment to be entered to win! They even hold a VIP parking spot for you at the WECC. Past ticket giveaways have included live shows from Carly Dow, and Deep Dark Woods, and Al Simmons.

Special discounts. Frogbox delivers eco-friendly storage boxes. You pack and move, and then they pick them up! Peg City members receive $25 off their minimum $100 order with FROGBOX. If you’re in need of a car rental, Winnipeg U-Drive offers our members %15 off Regular Rates (not applicable on weekend rates or specials.)

Where to go: Philip at Falcon Trails Resort

Share

For many, carsharing is a way to run errands and get around the city when walking, biking and busing isn’t practical. This is our bread and butter, but carsharing can be also used to hit the road and explore! That’s why we’ve created a new feature called “Where To Go”, where staff and members explore Manitoba (and beyond).

Last month, Operations Manager Philip Mikulec took the cargo van out for a trip to Falcon Trails Resort.

“As part of a yearly tradition my girlfriend and couple of friends head out to the eco-cabins to Falcon Trails Resort. It’s a great place to get away where with cabins that are off the grid and a secluded lake with no moterboats!

This is the first year we took a carshare vehicle. We loved the idea of taking the cargo van for all the food and fun beverages we pack (and we pack a lot), plus with our furry dog Pal in tow, there’s the added bonus that the cargo van is easy to clean.

Before heading out to the cabin, we took a detour to Kenora where we enjoyed great food and local brews from Lake of the Woods Brewing Company.

While we stayed for the whole weekend, Falcon Lake Trails Resort is a great place to visit as a day trip all year around! With frequent festivals, a ski hill, mountain bike and hiking trails, it’s a great place to hang out regardless of the season or weather.”

If you’re thinking of getting away, don’t hesitate to book any of our vehicles to hit the road, but our vans, trucks and cargo van are particularly well suited for outdoor adventures if you’re packing a lot of gear. If your looking to canoe, you can book our Nissan Frontier with it’s high quality Thule roof rack.

If you enjoy exploring Manitoba and are interested in sharing your carsharing experiences, let us know and we’d be happy to feature you on our next “Where To Go” post!

Re:Member – Winter readiness!

Re:Member is a series of helpful tips and reminders for Peg City Car Co-op members.

This month’s topic: Winter readiness!

Winter driving in Winnipeg is a horse of a different colour, but we are here with all the right gear to get your through it!

From November to April, all of our vehicles are outfitted with winter tires (even some of the big car rental companies don’t do this seasonal swap) and windshield scrapers, and more than half of our fleet has heated seats and back-up cameras to make your trip a little easier–and a lot warmer.

It’s important to remember that road conditions can be a bit unpredictable in the winter, so booking extra time on either side of your trip is a good idea. MPI always shares thoughtful and thorough tips on how to keep yourself (and your car) safe during the winter months. Practicing defensive driving is also important; give yourself and others plenty of room to stop on those icy streets.

Members benefit from daily rate caps and free overnight hours, making multi-day bookings over the winter holidays an easy, affordable option! Members pay $40/day (plus kms) and those on the Member Plus plan pay just $24/day (plus kms).

In the event of an inclement weather – a brutal cold snap, blizzard, or notice from the City to minimize all non-essential road travel – we will cancel current bookings at no charge to our members.

Re:Member – Time!

Re:Member is a series of helpful tips and reminders for Peg City Car Co-op members.

This month’s topic: Time!

Let’s talk about time. Bookings with Peg City Car Co-op are a minimum of one hour, and up to 21 days long, consecutively! After the first hour, time can be added in 15 minute increments.

If you’re running late, you can log into your personal account and tack on an extra 15 minutes, as long as no other member has a booking that starts right after yours. Adding time to an existing booking is ALWAYS cheaper than running overtime and incurring a late fee. Plus, updating the calendar to reflect the time the vehicle will be available for the next person is not only courteous, it keeps carsharing a reliable service for all our co-op members. Don’t have the means to log in and add time? Give us a call! Our staff can also extend your booking for you. Just be sure to have your account number and car information on hand.

What if I’m done with the car earlier than I expected?

Let’s say you booked a car for four hours, and only needed it for two. When you return the car, you can log into your personal account, and click the handy button that reads “I’m done with this vehicle“. That will release the car for someone else to use! If another member books into the time you originally booked, you don’t pay for the time they end up using. This works best when there is a significant amount of time left on your booking. Given the nature of carsharing – where members sign in, choose a car, travel to the spot where that car is parked, and start their trip – anything less than an hour or so isn’t likely to be used by someone else.

What if I need to cancel a booking?

No problem. Members can cancel a booking with more than 24 hours notice, with no cancellation fees. Bookings that are cancelled between 24 and six hours before they’re supposed to start are charged 50% of the hourly rate they were booked at. Bookings that are cancelled less than six hours before they start are charged 100% of the hourly rate. No Shows – when someone has booked the car, but hasn’t cancelled or used their booking – are charged 150% of the hourly rate. Why not free it up for someone else to use?

As always, if you have questions about your current membership plan, or, you’re interested in joining, get in touch! We’d love to chat with you.

Peg City Car Co-op + Rainbow Trout Music Festival

Share

Rainbow Trout Music Festival celebrated an exciting milestone this summer: 10 years!

We partner with some pretty neat organizations. We love connecting with their communities, investing in their projects, and helping them literally move things from Point A to Point B with our vehicles. Rainbow Trout Music Festival used two of our vehicles to haul gear out to Rosseau River for their three-day event. Here’s a little reflection on how the fest went this year, straight from the mouth of the Trout:

“Much like wine and cheese, Rainbow Trout Music Festival gets better with age.  Like the past numerous years, RTMF’s camping passes sold out before the festival began, reiterating our claim of being one of Manitoba’s most-anticipated festivals.

Our ten-year anniversary marked the first year we reached out to a diverse group of non-profit organizations to offer them 10 free day passes.  This was a success and an initiative that we will continue to expand upon. This past festival marked the second year we had ASL interpretation for Saturday’s programming; however, this year we expanded the interpretation to all of Saturday’s daytime programming as opposed to select sets.

An increase in festival art and animation budged allowed us to offer more collaborative art installations and projects to further unite our attendees. A highlight of the art and animation programming was the raku fish pottery, graciously run in the August heat by Elise Nadeau from The Edge Gallery.  Participants were able to paint and glaze their own trout memento to take home.

RTMF’s lineup truly had something for everyone.  From acoustic, to hip-hop, to danceable synth-pop that kept attendees dancing into the night.”

“No Rainbow Trout Festival is complete without the annual Carpet Beach Open Mic.  This year we had an even greater diverse crew of performers including juggling, stand-up comedy, and an adorable father/daughter duo who stole the show.

The cherry on top of the weekend, if we had to choose, would be the forever-fabulous Sunshine Brunch drag performance where a performer channeled their inner Marilyn Monroe and popped out of the life-size RTMF birthday cake, which was one of the many collaborative art projects this year.

As always, we couldn’t have delivered such a memorable festival experience without the help of our volunteers, organizers, board, sponsors, and land owners.  Here’s to the next 10 years!”

Re:Member – The right car for the job

This month’s topic: The Right Car for the Job

Our fleet of vehicles grows with the needs of our members, and while most people might need an average-sized car to pick up groceries or drive out to the beach, there are those trips that require a bit more space to get the job done.

We currently have two vans with Stow ‘n Go seating – both rear rows of seating fold flat into the floor, leaving ample room to transport large boxes, bikes, you name it! For heavier loads, we also have a truck and a cargo van, at your service. When you find yourself asking, “Do I know anyone with a truck?” … the answer is: yes. It’s YOU! Joining Peg City Car Co-op means you have access to all 30 vehicles in our fleet, including the ones you only need for those really specific, once-in-a-blue-moon kind of trips.

For information about the different plans we offer, CLICK HERE.

Are you currently a Casual driver interested in switching to a full membership?

Peg City Car Co-op + Synonym Art Consultation

Share

We have partnered with Winnipeg’s Synonym Art Consultation for a pretty wild collaboration!

Since 2012, Synonym Art Consultation has curated and facilitated over 100 different art installations and events in various venues across Winnipeg, always with the goal of making contemporary art more accessible to the public. We have partnered with Synonym to bring you some art on-the-go!

Designed by local artist Trevor Thomas, this incredible wrap was added to one of our vehicles in August (thanks to the experts at Shark Bait Auto Graphics!) and over the next year we will be rotating this car throughout the neighbourhoods in our network, so all of our members will have the opportunity to run their errands or roll up to their work meetings in style!

We asked Trevor to give us some insight into the design: “A mundane brick wall can evoke a burst of energy, life, excitement and colour—with intention, great artists and creativity. The playful scribbles and shapes are suggestive of the hands-on and imperfect aspects of mural painting, but ultimately becoming the perfectly imperfect parts of the whole. The colours were chosen in part of Synonym’s collective favourite colour combo, but also for the vibrating contrast they create.”

We attended the Wall-to-Wall Festival media launch on August 29th, to hear all about the murals they will be creating across the city, including buildings and walls in the North End, West Broadway, West End, and at The Forks.

“This year, more than ever, we are thrilled to be presenting a lineup of both visual and musical artists that reflect a wide range of voices from multiple communities. We strive to provide a festival that is accessible to as many people as possible, through multiple venues, styles of art and music, and ways of engaging. We can’t wait to help transform this city for the entire month of September,” says Andrew Eastman, Co-director and Co-curator of Synonym Art Consultation and Wall-to-Wall Festival. (Below, L-R: Festival curators and co-directors of Synonym Art Consultation, Chloe Chafe and Andrew Eastman, with Opportunities Coordinator, Joy Balmana)
