Re:Member – Car Rentals vs. Carsharing

Share

Re:Member is a series of helpful tips and reminders for current and future Peg City Car Co-op members.

This month’s topic: Car Rentals vs. Carsharing!

One question we get all the time from people who are interested in carsharing is: What is the difference between carsharing and renting a car?

The main difference between what we offer and what a car rental service offers is that carsharing is an ongoing option. Instead of filling out paperwork, buying insurance and picking up keys every time you want to use a car, members pick up a personal key fob one time, and … that’s it! Bookings are made online and vehicles can be accessed at any time of day.

Let’s Talk Money

Car rental companies will often charge a lot more for bigger vehicles, but with Peg City, the price between a hatchbacks, or a large and loadable vehicle like a minivan or cargo can is only $2 more a day. Members choose the price plan that will work best for them, and away they go.

Our hourly and per kilometre rates (we cover the cost of fuel) are some of the cheapest in the country, as far as carsharing goes! At our size, we can’t be competitive with all rates at all times, but more often than not our multi-day bookings stack up well against the big car rental companies.

Insurance coverage is as simple as joining our Damage Pool: it’s $50/year, and every driver on your Peg City account is covered in the event of an at-fault incident. (Check out our recent post about damages for more info.)

Flexibility

Carshare members can pick up and drop off vehicles whenever it works best for them. Bookings are a minimum of one hour, and after that, time can be added in fifteen minute increments. For example, instead having to rent a truck for a full 24 hours, carsharing gives drivers the flexibility to book for only the hours they actually need it. Just like a car rental, you can also book our cars for multiple days and take them out of town!

Special Features

Our members are often surprised (and delighted!) to learn that we swap our tires twice a year – once in the Spring, and again in the Fall – so that every vehicle in our fleet is outfitted with winter tires. We know they make a huge difference in the wintertime, and it’s a point of pride for us to make sure our members feel safe on the road. We also add other accessories to our vehicles, including roof racks, bike racks, trailer hitches and provincial park passes.

Awesome! I’m Still Going to Rent a Car, Though.

Sometimes a rental IS the best option, and that’s okay! Carsharing aims to fill a gap in transportation, not replace it as the only means of getting around. Our members receive a 15% discount on regular rentals with UDrive Winnipeg, for those times when renting a car just make more sense.

“More Winnipeggers are forgoing their cars, creating new attitudes and business opportunities.” Read on!

Thank you to Jen Zoratti at the Winnipeg Free Press for chatting with us about how we fit into the transportation conversation in Winnipeg.

Peg City Co-op operations manager Philip Mikulec says two reasons people join the car-sharing co-op is for environmental and financial reasons. (Phil Hossack / Winnipeg Free Press)

Here’s an excerpt:

“In the past 12 months, we’ve seen a growth in our fleet and membership of 30 per cent, and we’re continuing that trajectory,” says Philip Mikulec, operations manager at Peg City Co-op.

“Besides the laudable environmental goals, people who are joining car-sharing are largely doing it for economic reasons. This speaks to the change in the way people use our service and the kind of demand we’re seeing in our fleet. As we mature, we’re seeing more and more people joining because I think they see the economic benefits to themselves of not owning a car and having a reliable service they can use.”

So who uses car-sharing? At first, Peg City’s membership base was mostly the early adopters, or “avid non-car owners.” As the idea of a car co-op has become more accepted and mainstream, that base has widened to include people from a wide cross-section of socio-economic backgrounds. Based on Peg City’s data, the co-op’s core membership is made up of young, highly educated professionals who live in six-figure households. They tend to live and work either downtown or in the Exchange District. “They’d rather not spend $300 a month on parking alone,” Mikulec says.

Car-sharing doesn’t just help reduce household budgets by lessening the financial burden of car ownership. It also helps reduce carbon footprints. Carshare vehicles tend to be newer, more efficient and better maintained. Mikulec says industry data show that for every car-share vehicle put on the road, 10 to 15 vehicles are shed.

Mikulec believes Winnipeg has the potential to become a 100 to 200-car sharing city.

Even avid drivers are coming around on the idea of car-sharing. “We’re still speaking the same language — it’s about cars,” Mikulec says.

Where to go: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Share

For many, carsharing is a way to run errands and get around the city when walking, biking and busing isn’t practical. This is our bread and butter, but carsharing can be also used to hit the road and explore! That’s why we’ve created a new feature called “Where To Go”, where staff and members explore Manitoba (and beyond).

This month, one of our newest members decided to take a Peg City Car all the way down to Minneapolis!

“I decided to join Peg City Car Co-op because I have an old car that I don’t trust to take on the road outside of Winnipeg. I was thinking of renting a car but figured it might be time to join the Co-op and give it a try.

I was surprised to find that their rates were competitive with car rentals. While it was a bit more expensive, I appreciate the flexibility of carsharing. It’s nice being able to pick up a car when you like and not have to commit to keeping it for longer than you need. There’s the added bonus that all of Peg City’s cars come with winter tires, which was comforting while driving on winter roads.

So I was sold, and decided to go down to Minneapolis with the carshare. We hit the road early in the morning and enjoyed the heated front seats. Before getting to the border we stopped to enjoy the sunrise and some wind turbines!

While Minneapolis temperatures have nothing on Cuba, it was fun to get out of the city for the long weekend and Minneapolis has so much to offer. We went down for a concert, but ended up seeing a film festival, enjoyed the amazing food and micro-brew scene. It’s true what they say: Minneapolis is the new Portland!

The city is really nice with great bike paths and walking. We particularly enjoyed the river front park and walkway and the old stone bridge.

While we were in the area we noticed an old flour mill that had exploded decades ago and was now a museum! Sadly it was closed, but now it’s in our to-do list for next time!

We honestly couldn’t believe how much Minneapolis has to offer and will be making a trip back soon.

Overall, we had a great time and we’re glad that we took a Peg City car. We will definitely be doing more road trips with the carshare. Even if we keep our own car for a little longer, it’s nice to have access to a back up car, as well as trucks and vans. And when the time comes to retire my old car, we will be ready to fully take advantage of Peg City Car Co-op!

If you are interested in sharing your carsharing adventures, let us know and we’d be happy to feature you on our next “Where To Go” post!

A refresher for members about vehicle damage!

Re:Member is a series of helpful tips and reminders for our Peg City Car Co-op members (and any future members!)

This month’s topic: Damage.

One of the best things about joining a carshare is not having to worry about the financial burden and inconvenience of maintenance and repairs. When you’re done with your booking, you get to park the car, and walk away! During the time you have a car booked, however, there is always the possibility of the dreaded ‘D’ word: Damage. Let’s talk about it so you’re informed and prepared!

Before Your Booking Starts

• Check your booking confirmation and read over the Damage Report. We will list any damages we’re already aware of.
• Walk around the vehicle and check for new damage. If you spot any cracks or dents we haven’t listed, you can report the damage in one of these three ways:

1. EMAIL: [email protected]. Whenever possible, send photos.
2. VEHICLE NOTES: Log into your account, and add a note directly to your booking.
3. PHONE: 204-793-3912.

Note: It’s important to tell us about new damage as soon as you see it, so we can put together a timeline of when the damage may have taken place.

If Damage Occurs During Your Booking

• Contact Peg City staff to report the damage.
• If you have been in an accident, get yourself to a safe spot, contact police and/or paramedics, and gather all of the necessary information post-collision.

Uh Oh. Does That Mean I Have to Pay for the Damage?

That depends! If the damage is not at-fault – meaning you did not cause the damage, or you were in an accident or collision that is deemed to be another driver’s fault – you do not have to pay for the damages.

If you caused the damage, and you do not have Collision Loss Damage Insurance (also known as CLDI, which is coverage through your personal credit card provider) OR you are not in our Damage Pool, you are responsible for paying the $750 damage fee (as outlined in the Member Manual).

HOLD UP. What’s the Damage Pool?

For $50/year, you can join our Damage Pool, and every driver on your household account is fully covered by all aspects of Peg City Car Co-op’s insurance, and will not be required to pay the $750 damage fee in the event that a Co-op vehicle is damage during your booking. Instead, the money will come out of the Damage Pool! You can immediately re-join if you have to apply the pool to a damage incident.

Remember: you’re not just renting a car, you’re sharing a resource with your neighbours. Take your time while parking, leave a generous distance between cars while driving, and be aware of road and weather conditions that may impact everyone’s ability to drive safely. Help us keep our fleet in great shape!

Whether you find it with a paddle in hand, by slipping into a well-worn pair of hiking boots, gliding through a winter wonderland or traveling to the end of the earth, Wilderness Supply understands that you need reliable equipment, and they ensure that they carry the best gear for all your adventures.

Wilderness Supply started as a mom-and-pop outdoor store, and their flagship location is still located on the somewhat inconspicuous Ferry Road in Winnipeg.  Through expansions and opening two more locations, they have never lost that small store feel simply by caring about their customers and getting them outdoors.

Peg City Car Co-op Members receive 1 free day of rental with any multi-day rental of paddle sports equipment. Let the incredible staff at Wilderness Supply know that you are a Peg City Car Co-op member when you book your multi-day rental.

Multi-day bookings are easy to make, and competitive with long distance rates across the industry. With Peg City, you can book a vehicle for as little as $23/day, and your per kilometre rate drops to $0.18/km after the first 50km driven!

These perks are only available to share-holding members. If you’re a Casual driver, and you’re interested in upgrading your account to take advantage of these amazing perks – as well as benefits like free overnight hours, daily rate caps, and more – contact us at [email protected], or by phone at 204-793-3912.

Happy New Year!

Share

We had a very exciting year. Thank you to our board, staff, investors and all of our members for supporting carsharing in Winnipeg!

In 2018, we expanded our network and grew from 26 vehicles in June to 32 by December! We added a few bigger vehicles to our fleet, including a cargo van, a second truck, and a third van.

We partnered with some wonderful local groups, like Bike Valet WinnipegRainbow Trout Music Festival, and Synonym Art Consultation, to name a few. One of our cars is featured below in a custom art wrap for Synonym’s Wall to Wall mural festival. This dynamic art car will be on the road all throughout 2019 for our members to drive. An exciting opportunity came up for Peg City Car Co-op to once again offer investment shares – thanks to the Manitoba Community Enterprise Development Tax Credit Program – and we raised $200,000 to help us reach our goal of 50 vehicles by 2021. The future of carsharing in Winnipeg is looking mighty bright!

ANDREW RYAN / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Philip Mikulec is the operations manager of Peg City Co-op which has been in operation for eight years and is looking to expand it’s operations with a new public offering. Shot on June 26, 2018.
