Fall statement to members

Share

Here’s our Operations Manager, Philip Mikulec, with our fall statement to members.

Phil Mikulec, Operations Manager

With over half a year of COVID-19 under our belts, we have experienced a lot of ups and downs, both as a carsharing community and as Winnipeggers. Here at Peg City Car Co-op, we take the safety of our members very seriously. In these ever-changing times, we are taking a proactive approach to our cleaning practices, while remaining adaptive to your transportation needs.

As infection numbers increase in our province, we are enhancing our member safety protocols by introducing the provision of hand sanitizer in all our vehicles. Our committed Fleet Team at Peg City Car Co-op spent weeks researching the best products that have a low impact on your hands and won’t damage the interior of our vehicles. Our hand sanitizer program will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks. Be sure to keep an eye out for our Peg City Car Co-op branded sanitizer bottles.

This initiative is the latest in our ongoing efforts to ensure our members, and their passengers, enjoy a safe ride in our vehicles. When COVID-19 officially hit Manitoba in March of 2020, we increased our sanitization schedule by 300% and introduced a pre-sanitization program for our most vulnerable members. We continue to offer a frontline price plan to help individuals and community groups on the frontline of the pandemic. You can learn more about our COVID-19-based programs by visiting our blog post dedicated to our pandemic response.

As a carsharing service, we are also focused on keeping all of our initiatives sustainable and eco-friendly. We are pleased to report that over the summer, we introduced a zero-emission cleaning fleet that includes a Nissan Leaf and a people-powered cargo bike which we use to transport new plant-based biodegradable sanitization and cleaning products from vehicle to vehicle. This new initiative saves almost 500 litres of water per wash and allows our cleaning staff to travel to cars without worrying about what comes out of the tailpipe.

Throughout the various phases of the pandemic, we are continuously adapting to the carsharing needs of our members. In the spring, we had to adapt to decreased demand as the province went into lockdown. At this time we reduced our fleet size temporarily by 30% to help right-size our fleet and reduce costs. We were incredibly appreciative of how understanding our membership was of these quick changes. As we emerged from lockdown, we saw a quick boost in demand. We reacted as quickly as possible, increasing our fleet size by nearly 20%. We were incredibly excited to respond to the needs of our members as you made the best of a difficult situation and went out to explore our beautiful province. Some of our members took the opportunity to share their stories with the broader community, which we covered on our blog here and here.

To be sure, the coming months will be full of challenges. Our small but dedicated team will be there to help you through these challenges, by providing the best carsharing service possible. We are committed to remaining nimble to your needs and helping to keep you safe in these ever-changing times.

Mobile Murals: Meet the Artists

Share

Peg City Car Co-op and Synonym Art Consultation are thrilled to announce our wildest collaboration yet! Featuring artists Cyndie Belhumeur and Shaneela Boodoo.

Since 2012, Synonym Art Consultation has curated and facilitated over 100 different art installations and events in various venues across Winnipeg, always with the goal of making contemporary art more accessible to the public. Once again, we have partnered with Synonym to bring you some art on-the-go, just in time for Wall-to-Wall 2020!

Ford 150 Transit & mural

Our biggest cargo van, the Ford 150 Transit, now features Cyndie Belhumeur and Shaneela Boodoo’s 2019 Wall-to-Wall mural submission. Cyndie and Shaneela’s mural was a no-brainer when it came to selecting a mural for our new Peg City cargo van, with the artwork’s many ties to Winnipeg. Our past collaborations with Synonym artists have been outstanding, so we were excited to go even bigger this year!

Cyndie Belhumeur

Cyndie Belhumeur is a multidisciplinary artist living in Montreal. Cyndie questions sensitive representations of an ever-evolving volume of information. Using different approaches and mediums, she plays with accumulation, density, intimacy and overload of information to draw invisible links between virtual and real. She pushes back notions of limits and exchanges between physical and digital aspects as well as the changes that this relationship arouses in our understanding of the world. Cyndie aims to overwhelm the spectator presenting a multitude of intertwined elements by using multiple images, superimpositions and a variety of mediums. With these, she attempts to arouse a variety of interpretations, even opposing ones: organic and psychic, harmonized and chaotic and disturbing.

Shaneela Boodoo

Shaneela Boodoo is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a BFA (Honours) in Design. She is a second-generation immigrant, born and based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and identifies as Indo-Caribbean. As an emerging artist, designer, and curator, Boodoo explores themes such as colonialism, displacement, and womanhood. Boodoo has also worked to establish and brand many BIPOC collectives in the city, such as RIND, Patterns Collective and Chroma Collective. She was previously the Gallery Program Assistant at the School of Art and has curated shows such as Adornment and Analogous that centered the experiences of BIPOC in institutional spaces. Shaneela currently sits on Wall-to-Wall’s 2020 Artistic Committee.

For 2019’s Wall-to-Wall, Cyndie was tasked to create a mural that brought life, colour, and creativity to downtown Winnipeg. Cyndie developed a mural design pulling together feelings, textures, experiences, and instances of Winnipeg/ Treaty 1 Territory as collected and shared by Shaneela.

The collaborative mural references the many facets that Manitobans recognize such as frosty trees, pink prairie evening skies, transit bus seat patterns, and murky spring puddles.

You might spot our latest mobile mural around town or take it for a drive yourself!

COVID-19 update from Peg City Car Co-op’s Operations Manager

Share

It has been almost a month since COVID-19 hit Manitoba. Since it’s arrival, a lot has changed, as the government has moved swiftly to curb transmission through social distancing.

By now, most people who can stay home are doing so, which has resulted in quieter streets. Less activity has resulted in a reduction in trips for all forms of mobility, including carsharing. At the same time, we understand that many of our members rely on our service for essential grocery runs and activities. We have committed ourselves today more than ever, to be there for our members during these trying times.

From day one of the pandemic, we have worked to ensure our fleet is safe to use for essential trips. Our staff are working harder than ever to keep cars sanitized for our members. We have even started offering pre-sanitization for individuals who are living with or are themselves, at risk. To help frontline workers, we have also introduced a new price plan. You can learn more about these efforts here

During these difficult times, we also need to watch our costs as less demand means less revenue to pay for fixed expenses like staff, insurance, and parking, to name a few examples. To ensure we are here to serve the community now, and in the long run, we decided to delay expansion, and even reduce our fleet size.

If you notice that there are fewer vehicles in your neighbourhood, it’s because we have made the difficult and unwanted decision to adjust our fleet size to reduce costs and to help ensure we can keep our cars as clean as possible.

Rest assured that as soon demand picks up we will be reintroducing vehicles as quickly as possible. We also look forward to the day when we can continue our expansion efforts.

To our members and community, may you and your family be safe and well.

Sincerely,

Philip Mikulec

Member update: Help keep each other safe

An updated message on our COVID-19 response

The team at Peg City Car Co-op (PCCC) is closely monitoring the news and government updates regarding COVID-19. We will continue to update our members and community through social media and direct email messaging.
Our chief concern during this time is member and staff safety.

Lets-Keep-eachother-Safe

Transmission and spread

Health professionals have ascertained that COVID-19 can be spread through exposure to infected droplets. COVID-19 can survive on surfaces for as little as a few hours and up to a few days depending on environmental conditions and the type of surface. However, scientific evidence indicates that surface contact is not the primary way the virus spreads.

The primary cause of transmission is continued exposure to respiratory aerosols. Since vehicles are confined spaces, you are unlikely to come into contact with the virus through coughing or sneezing unless an infected person accompanies you. It is, therefore, a relatively safe place.

We continue to monitor research and best practices to ensure our members and community are kept safe.

Preventative measures

Peg City Car Co-op recommends that members follow the advice of Manitoba Health to avoid transmitting the virus.

To minimize the spread of COVID-19, we are taking extra steps to sanitize our vehicles, which includes implementing new cleaning standards that focus on disinfecting high-touch places in each car.

We strongly encourage all passengers to:

– Sanitize their hands before and after entering or exiting a vehicle;

– Wear a mask while inside the car;

– When possible, use an alcohol-based disinfectant to wipe down surfaces; and routinely disinfect your hands if you don’t have access to soap and water.

More than ever, it is essential that members practice good hygiene (e.g. sneeze into their arms, remove waste from vehicles, wear masks).

If you may have been exposed to COVID-19, or feel any symptoms commonly associated with the illness (e.g. fever, sore throat, cough), please do not use Peg City Car Co-op vehicles. Follow guidelines set out by Manitoba Health.

Take care out there

As a community, we can all work together to contribute to reducing the spread of COVID-19. If you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19, or feel any symptoms commonly associated with the illness (e.g. fever, sore throat, cough), please follow guidelines set out by Manitoba Health.

Working together, we can all keep each other safe!

Damage Awareness Month: Reporting

Share

This week we are tackling the importance of reporting damage. This topic is so critical to carsharing we made a snazzy comic for your viewing pleasure! Enjoy.

We are nearly wrapping up Damage Awareness Month here on our blog, and we’ve created a pair of comics to address a topic that is decidedly not so fun.

We hope that sharing helpful winter driving tips, laying out the different insurance options, and outlining how we track vehicle damage, members will feel informed and ready to help keep our entire fleet in the best shape possible. If a car gets bumped, scraped, dinged, or worse, we need to know about it. The sooner we are able to assess and repair damage, the sooner we can get that vehicle back on the road! We happily take on the hassle and cost of vehicle maintenance and repair so that those who choose to go car-free or car-lite don’t have to worry about it.

When damage goes unreported – and unclaimed – it means we have to pay out of pocket, and ultimately that means higher rates for our members. With help from our members, we can stay on top of repairs AND keep costs low for everyone.  So on that note here is a comic on Damage Reporting.

Enjoy!

Damage Awareness Month: Prevention

Share

For the month of November, we have been exploring the topic of damage. The next two posts feature a pair of comics that we hope will entertain and inform! First up: Damage Prevention.

Carshare vehicles tend to take a bit more of a beating than your average car, truck, or van. This is because there are different people behind the wheel every day, sometimes every few hours, and they all have different driving habits. Some people are experts with parking in small spots, while others may have less experience driving large vehicles. We encourage defensive driving, staying alert and aware of all your surroundings, and always taking the weather and road conditions into account – this is hands down the best way to prevent damage from happening in the first place.

When damage occurs, minimizing the amount of time that a vehicle is taken out of service is always at the top of our minds, but preventing the damage from happening in the first place is something we can all have a hand in. Without further ado, here is comic number one … Damage Prevention.

Enjoy!

Damage Awareness Month: Keeping Track

Share

For the month of November, we have been exploring the topic of damage here on the blog. Here is our Fleet Manager, Will Belford, with the low down on tracking damage.

Hi I’m Will, Fleet Manager here at Peg City Car Co-op. If you’ve been following the blog throughout November, you know that vehicle damage is a very important topic for us. It not only affects how the vehicles look, but how they function as well.

Damage awareness Month, Keeping track, Will Belford standing near Peg City Vehicles

We’re wrapping up Damage Awareness Month, and hope our members feel informed and ready for the road ahead. Through this month we’ve offered some helpful winter driving tips, laid out the different insurance options that are available to members, and shared a pair of comics to address topics that  help keep our cars (and our drivers) safe! Last but not least, today we are pulling back the curtain on how we track vehicle damage, and how you can help!

Carshare vehicles are used more vigorously than your average car, truck, or van. This is because there are different people behind the wheel every day, sometimes every few hours. Some people are experts with parking in small spots, while others may have less experience driving large vehicles. A good defense from incurring damage is preparation! If you have never driven a type of vehicle before, give it a quick once over to familiarize yourself. How far does the bumper stick out? Are the seat and mirrors adjusted properly? Does this vehicle feature a backup camera? We encourage defensive driving, staying alert and aware of all your surroundings, and always taking the weather and road conditions into account – this is hands down the best way to prevent damage from happening in the first place.

So what about damage caused by someone else? Inspecting and reporting damage to Peg City staff will mean you don’t get held responsible for something you didn’t do. The best time to inspect and report is before you begin driving.

After you make a booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details of your trip, as well as a short list of any damage on that car that we’re already aware of. Any preexisting scratches, dings, or dents will be noted by a numbered sticker on the car itself.

We’ve added window stickers and booklets in every car to remind you to Take 5 Before You Drive – the booklet will guide you through damage tracking and help troubleshoot common booking issues. Here’s our Fleet Manager, Will, installing them in our first AWD SUV, parked in the Exchange District.

When you arrive to pick up your ride, walk around the vehicle to check for anything new. If you spot any new damage that is larger than a credit card, and it does not have a numbered sticker, it needs to be reported.

You only need to report damage that doesn’t have a sticker or is not in the damage notes in your booking confirmation. Was this dent listed in the email? Is that one big scratch or two separate ones? We would rather hear about it twice than never hear about it at all.

We rely on our members to be our eyes and ears out there on the road! To report damage, please send us an email with photos, or give us a call. This should always be done at the start of your trip.

If you happen to be the one to cause some damage, big or small, please let us know. If you are in a collision, or you are not sure if a vehicle is safe to drive, call us. We have staff on call 7am-midnight seven days a week.

Thank you for reading, and for helping to keep our fleet in tip-top shape.

This December, add 2 drivers for free and earn up to $50 in driving credit!

Damage Awareness Month: Insurance

Share

For the month of November, we will be exploring the topic of damage here on the blog. This week we’re talking about insurance!

Our carsharing service takes the hassle out of owning a vehicle. When you’re done with your booking, simply return the vehicle and walk away! We cover the cost of fuel, maintenance, and insurance!

But what happens if a vehicle is damaged during your booking?

There are three coverage options available to members, which can help reduce or remove your damage fee. These options include our Basic Coverage, Damage Pool and third party Collision/Loss Damage Insurance options (CLDI).

Basic Coverage
All members are covered by Peg City Car Co-op with basic coverage of up to $1000 damage fee in the event of an at-fault collision and $4,800,000 Third Party Liability (TPL). This means in the event of an unfortunate incident causing at-fault damage to a Co-op vehicle during your booking, your damage fee is up to $1000. Personal Injury Protection (PIPP) coverage (bodily injury) also applies to drivers and passengers while they are occupying the vehicle in Manitoba.

If a Co-op vehicle is stolen during your booking, you could pay up to $1000, plus downtime at the regular hourly rates. Vehicle theft is easily preventable if you fob out properly – every time you stop and park – the vehicle cannot be stolen. Pretty neat, huh?

Damage Pool
Members can join Peg City’s Damage Pool for $50/year. This coverage includes all aspects of Peg City Car Co-op’s basic insurance, plus you will not be required to pay the $1000 damage fee in the event that a Co-op vehicle is damaged during your booking. Instead, the money will come out of the pool! You can apply to re-join the damage pool if you are in an at-fault incident. The Damage Pool covers all drivers on the account.

CLDI
Many credit cards now offer Collision/Loss Damage Insurance (CLDI) that includes carsharing. In the event of a collision, Peg City will provide all the necessary documents for to you to bring to your credit card provider, and they will reimburse you directly for the total cost of the damages. With VISA or MasterCard CLDI coverage, you would be fully covered by the credit card company for any damage to a Co-op vehicle. Your card may not cover certain vehicles (for example, pick-up trucks), so always check with your provider to find out what their restrictions are!

If you’re already a driver with Peg City, adding the Damage Pool or CLDI to your account is easy – simply log in, and click on Damage Coverage, found under the My Account tab. For more details take a look at our Member Manual.

Of course, we hope that there is never any reason to invoke your carsharing insurance, but we want to make sure our members know what their options are. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch!
